A 42-year-old New Philadelphia man has died following a shooting Sunday afternoon that police say stemmed from a physical altercation between two people who knew each other.
New Philadelphia Police Chief Tessa Pohovey identified the victim as Christopher Damron, 42, of New Philadelphia. Damron died Sunday evening, Sept. 20, at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital after being transported from the scene.
Pohovey told Jordan Miller News that the shooting occurred inside a residence at 238 Second St. SW shortly after 4 p.m.
According to police, dispatchers initially received two 911 hang-up calls from the address. Attempts to call back went unanswered before a third caller reported that a man had been shot.
Officers arrived and apprehended one man while providing medical assistance to Damron until the New Philadelphia Fire Department arrived. Both men were transported to the hospital.
Pohovey said the incident involved a physical altercation between two men who were known to one another. Both sustained injuries during the confrontation, but Damron was the only person shot. Other witnesses were inside the residence when the incident occurred, according to Pohovey.
The suspect remains in custody, but police have not released his identity. Pohovey said murder charges have been submitted, with formal charges expected to be filed Tuesday.
The suspect’s condition has not been disclosed.
Police have confirmed the shooting was an isolated incident and said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The New Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
