A shelter-in-place order at Malone University was lifted Monday morning after police determined a reported threat to the campus was a hoax.
The university issued an emergency alert at about 8:22 a.m., ordering all buildings to go into lockdown and instructing students, faculty and staff to remain where they were until further notice. The alert stated the situation was “not a test” and “not a drill.”
At approximately 9:17 a.m., Malone University sent a follow-up alert announcing the shelter-in-place order had been lifted and normal activities could resume.
University officials said Canton Police investigated the threat and believe it was not credible. Police remained on campus following the all-clear and continued to patrol the area as a precaution.
An official with the university said the shelter-in-place order was issued out of an abundance of caution after the threat was received. No injuries were reported, and no damage was found on campus.
University officials urged anyone on campus to report suspicious activity immediately to campus safety or law enforcement.
The incident remains under review.
