An explosion followed by a fire was reported Monday afternoon at a scrapyard in Jackson Township, sending a large plume of black smoke into the sky and prompting a multi-agency emergency response.

The incident was reported around 5:30 p.m. at Fosnaught’s Auto Parts on Whipple Avenue near the intersection with Dressler Road. The business processes scrap metal.

Jackson Township Fire Department is the primary agency on scene, with mutual aid assistance from North Canton and Green fire departments.

Police shut down a portion of Whipple Avenue as crews worked the active scene.

Early reports indicate an explosion occurred on the property, sparking a fire. The extent of damage and whether anyone was injured were not immediately known.
