A Canton Township family was displaced after an early-morning house fire caused a total loss Wednesday.
Canton Township firefighters were called to a structure fire at 4918 Fields Ave. at 2:11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, according to Canton Township Fire Chief Chris Smith.
Smith said the fire started in the home’s attached garage and quickly spread into the house. The blaze caused extensive damage, with the floor collapsing into the basement and the roof also giving way.
All four adult occupants were inside the home at the time of the fire and were awakened by it. Smith said everyone was able to escape safely, and no injuries were reported to firefighters or civilians.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the displaced family members.
Firefighters from multiple departments responded through mutual aid, including Canton City, Plain Township, Perry Township and Bolivar. Tanker support was provided by departments from Erie Valley, Osnaburg and East Sparta.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Smith said a space heater located in the garage is a possible factor, according to the family, but officials have not confirmed a cause.
