A gas-like odor at a Cadiz nursing home prompted a full evacuation Wednesday morning, drawing a major emergency response from across Harrison County.
Emergency crews were called to Health Meadows of Cadiz after staff reported a strong gas smell inside the facility. More than eight ambulances responded to the scene, along with multiple fire departments, police, and Columbia Gas representatives.
Eric Wilson, Harrison County EMA Director, said the Cadiz Police Department was first to arrive and made the call to evacuate roughly 60 residents as a precaution.
“There was a strong odor that resembled natural gas, so we activated all emergency protocols,” Wilson said. “Our main focus was to make sure everyone got out safely and stayed warm while we investigated.”
Residents were transported to the Stevenson Center — the former Cadiz school building — where they were kept safe from the cold. The Harrison Hills City School District provided school buses, including those equipped with wheelchair ramps, to help move residents quickly and comfortably.
After hours of investigation, Columbia Gas and local fire crews determined the odor was not from natural gas. Instead, they suspect it originated from the sewer system, according to Wilson.
“Columbia Gas confirmed there were no natural gas readings inside the building,” Wilson said. “It appears the smell may have come from sewer gas.”
Fire crews used large fans to ventilate the facility, and gas meters confirmed no explosive or hazardous gases were present. Once the building was cleared and deemed safe, residents were returned to their rooms.
No injuries were reported.
Nearby, Christopher’s Restaurant in Cadiz was also evacuated after trace amounts of gas were detected, and some residential areas reported smelling gas as well. Officials say the village water and sewer department is continuing to investigate the possible source of the odor.
“We’re thankful this turned out to be a non-hazardous situation,” Wilson said. “Everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do, and all the residents are safe.”
