After colorful hot air balloons took to the skies Friday morning, organizers say the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Balloon Classic presented by Aultman is just getting started, with balloon launches, drone shows, live entertainment and family activities continuing throughout the weekend.
The three-day festival, held at Kent State University at Stark, features approximately 40 hot air balloons, food and craft vendors, live music, children’s activities and several special attractions.
“We’re really a community festival,” said Darla Brown, vice president of marketing and membership strategy for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. “There’s truly something for everyone.”
One of Friday morning’s highlights was the return of the Dawn Patrol, a pre-sunrise balloon launch that had not taken place since 2008.
Brown said organizers received special approval to bring the early morning tradition back, allowing balloon pilots to light up the predawn sky before sunrise.
“It lights up the morning sky,” Brown said. “It was really special to be able to bring that back.”
After weather impacted portions of last year’s Balloon Classic, Brown said organizers are optimistic that favorable conditions will allow many of this year’s scheduled launches to take place.
Weather permitting, additional balloon launch windows are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, 6:30 a.m. Saturday, 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
Friday evening also features the popular Balloon Glow, scheduled from 9 to 9:30 p.m., when tethered balloons illuminate the festival grounds after sunset.
Another major attraction this weekend will be two drone light shows, each featuring 600 synchronized drones telling a unique story through music and animation.
Friday night’s show carries an Outer Space theme, while Saturday night’s performance celebrates America 250, honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Brown said the drone performances are synchronized to music broadcast live on Mix 94.1, allowing spectators to experience the show with a coordinated soundtrack.
Before Friday’s main performance begins at 10 p.m., a brief teaser show is planned around 9:20 p.m. featuring several drone formations before the fleet lands to recharge for the full presentation.
Live entertainment continues throughout the weekend.
New Wave Nation performs Friday evening on the Sugardale Stage, while The Scenic Route takes the stage Saturday night. The Aerohio Sky Divers are also scheduled to perform both evenings.
Beyond the balloons, visitors can enjoy food trucks, craft vendors, a children’s activity area, games, tethered balloon rides and family-friendly entertainment throughout the festival grounds.
For guests looking for a premium experience, the Balloon Classic is also hosting the Soaring Soiree, an adults-only VIP event overlooking the festival.
Friday night’s Summer Safari experience sold out before the festival began, but Brown said limited tickets remain for Saturday night’s “Moroccan Mirage” experience, scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m.
The $125 admission includes VIP parking, unlimited food and beverages, an open bar and exclusive entertainment in a private setting overlooking the Balloon Classic.
Saturday’s Moroccan-themed event features a live DJ, belly dancing, henna artists, themed décor and cuisine inspired by the colors and culture of Morocco.
“The Soaring Soiree really gives guests a chance to experience the Balloon Classic in a unique way,” Brown said.
Festival gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with balloons launching again early Sunday morning. All balloon activities remain weather permitting.
Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early, especially for evening events, as large crowds are expected throughout the weekend leading up to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival.
