Authorities say a Thursday afternoon shooting at the Orrville Power Plant was a murder-suicide that left two men dead, according to a press release from the Orrville Police Department.

Police identified the suspect as Robert R. Simon, 69, of Wooster. Investigators said Simon shot a 46-year-old man in a parking lot at the power plant before turning the gun on himself.

Officers were dispatched to the facility in the 1100 block of Perry Street at about 3:17 p.m. Thursday after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers secured the area and found two adult males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

According to authorities, a preliminary investigation determined Simon approached the victim in the parking lot and discharged a firearm, striking him. After the shooting, Simon sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was transported by emergency medical personnel to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died despite medical intervention, police said.

Officials emphasized there was no active or ongoing threat to the public at any point during the incident.

The investigation is being led by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, with assistance from the Orrville Fire Department, the Wooster Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 855-224-6446.
