The family of a 47-year-old Canton woman found dead near a creek on the city’s southeast side is speaking out, calling for answers and justice as police continue their investigation.
Authorities said the body of Charise M. Otis was discovered around 2:45 p.m. April 14 near the water in the 1600 block of Third Street SE. According to dispatch audio, a 911 caller initially reported what “kind of” looked like a body before confirming it appeared to be a full human body lying close to the creek.
Police said Otis was found wrapped in blankets and secured with a ratchet strap. She was transported to the Stark County Coroner’s Office, and an autopsy is expected to be conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials have not released a cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
In interviews with Jordan Miller News, Otis’ twin sister, Chrystal Otis, described an unbreakable bond and the devastation of losing her “other half.”
“She didn’t deserve this,” Chrystal Otis said. “She loved people. She loved her family.”
Chrystal Otis said her sister, who struggled with mental illness and addiction, was not homeless but often stayed with friends. She said the last time she spoke with her sister was March 29.
Family members grew concerned after receiving a troubling message from one of Otis’ friends on April 1. Days later, they were notified that her body had been found.
Now, the family is urging anyone with information to come forward.
“Whoever did this, they need to be caught,” Chrystal Otis said.
Otis’ father, Kelly Levert, said no family should have to endure such a loss and called for the community to take action against violence.
“We’ve got to put an end to this,” Levert said. “Families shouldn’t have to suffer like this.”
Levert also urged those responsible to turn themselves in and encouraged community members to speak up if they know anything that could help investigators.
Family members are planning a vigil to honor Otis and raise awareness, with a homegoing celebration scheduled for May 2.
