A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after Akron police said he was found with a stolen handgun following a brief foot chase.

Detectives with the Akron Police Department’s Anti-Violence Bureau were conducting surveillance April 21 after receiving information that the juvenile was hiding a firearm near East C.L.C. officers observed the boy entering a garage in the 1800 block of Shaw Avenue and attempted to stop him.

Police said the teen fled on foot but was quickly apprehended after a short chase.

During the arrest, detectives recovered a stolen Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun from the juvenile’s waistband. He was taken into custody and transported to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

The boy faces charges including carrying concealed weapons, obstructing official business, receiving stolen property and theft.

“This case highlights the proactive work of our Anti-Violence Bureau detectives who continue to identify and monitor individuals involved in criminal activity before situations escalate into violence,” Akron Police Chief Brian Harding said in a statement. “Removing firearms from the hands of juveniles is critical to keeping our community safe.”
