An 18-year-old woman was killed Friday evening in a one-vehicle crash in Orange Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers from the New Philadelphia Post said the crash occurred at about 6:38 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, on County Road 22 (Azalea Road) just west of the village of Leesville.
Investigators said a silver 2012 Volkswagen Passat was traveling eastbound when it crossed the centerline, went off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment. The vehicle overturned and the driver was ejected.
The driver, identified as Kyra Bunton, 18, of New Philadelphia, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner’s Office.
A passenger, Charity Kulig, 18, of Midvale, sustained minor injuries and was taken by Bowerston Fire Department to Mercy Hospital for treatment.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Bowerston Fire Department, Leesville Fire Department, Carroll County Coroner’s Office, Keith’s Towing and the Carroll County Road and Bridge Department assisted at the scene.
Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, authorities said. Troopers also reported Bunton was not wearing a seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
