Louisville City Schools announced Sunday that Matt Furino has stepped down from his position as head football coach for the Louisville Leopards due to a newly identified medical issue.

Furino, who was recently hired by the Louisville City Schools Board of Education, said the decision was difficult but necessary after discussions with his family. He cited the need to prioritize his health at this time.

School officials said Furino had not yet begun on-field coaching duties but had been working behind the scenes preparing for the upcoming season. Despite stepping away, Furino expressed confidence in the direction of the Leopards football program and in the leadership that will guide the team moving forward.

Louisville City Schools, along with the district’s athletic department, student-athletes, families and the broader Leopard community, voiced their support for Furino and extended best wishes as he addresses his health.

District officials said additional information regarding the football program’s next steps and coaching transition will be shared soon.

Furino has requested privacy for himself and his family during this time.
