Stark, Carroll County men arrested in fatal apartment shooting

A Canton man and a Carroll County man were arrested Wednesday night in connection with a fatal shooting that left a 20-year-old Massillon man dead at a Skyline Terrace apartment complex, authorities said.

Ta’Shaun M. Smith was shot Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the 600 block of Alan Page Drive SE and later died at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, according to the Stark County Coroner’s Office. Smith was pronounced dead at 5:54 p.m., and the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Canton police took two suspects into custody around 10 p.m. and booked them into the Stark County Jail on murder charges, jail records show. The suspects were identified as Niko M. Marshall, 18, of Canton, and Nathaniel M. Sanford, 33, of Sherrodsville.

Online Stark County court records show no formal charges have yet been filed directly linking either man to Smith’s death.

Police were called to the apartment complex around 5:30 p.m. following a report of a shooting. Smith was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy is being conducted by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
