An Ohio-based, woman-owned company headquartered in Minerva has begun commercial production of a new fentanyl detection tool designed to help protect first responders from accidental exposure during calls involving suspected narcotics.
Visual Detection Systems announced that its handheld fentanyl detection wipe, known as First Defense, is now commercially available following years of research, testing and development. The wipe allows users to quickly determine the presumptive presence of fentanyl through a one-step, visual detection process.
According to the company, field trials conducted with law enforcement agencies in Ohio, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Massachusetts produced positive results. Additional testing at the Peabody Police Department in Massachusetts recently confirmed the product’s effectiveness in real-world conditions.
The detection wipe is intended for use by police officers, emergency medical personnel and healthcare workers, providing a rapid method to identify fentanyl and reduce the risk of accidental exposure during traffic stops, medical emergencies and evidence handling.
“Our mission is to protect those who protect us,” said Ann Hull, owner of Visual Detection Systems. Hull is also a co-owner of Summit Glove, a Minerva-based manufacturer of protective gloves. “This product is a direct result of cross-industry collaboration, scientific innovation and a commitment to public safety.”
Visual Detection Systems said it is an equal opportunity employer and continues to serve as a hub for innovation across multiple disciplines. For more information about the First Defense fentanyl detection wipe, please visit www.firstdefensewipe.com.
