An Akron police officer shot an armed, intoxicated man Tuesday night after responding to a reported fight in the 2700 block of Albrecht Avenue, according to the Akron Police Department.

Police said officers were dispatched around 9:03 p.m. for a fight call and were told a man in the parking lot was armed with a gun and had pointed it at multiple people. When a responding officer arrived, the man confronted the officer, officials said. Moments later, the officer fired his weapon, striking the man.

Officers provided aid until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The officer involved has about four years of police experience, including the last year with Akron police. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation. Once completed, the case will be reviewed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office before being sent to a Summit County grand jury. The department’s Office of Professional Standards will also conduct an internal review.

No additional information has been released.
