Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in Canton was placed on a hard lockdown Tuesday evening following an alleged bomb threat that prompted a heavy police response and K-9 sweeps across the hospital campus.

In a statement to Jordan Miller News, hospital officials said they were notified of the threat around 6:48 p.m.

“At 6:48 p.m. today, we were made aware of a threat at Mercy Hospital. Canton Police were notified immediately and worked in close collaboration with our Cleveland Clinic Police Department and hospital personnel to ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and employees. The hospital remained open for patient care and the threat was cleared by Cleveland Clinic and Canton Police,” the statement read.

During the lockdown, visitors reported being unable to enter the building unless they were patients. One family told JMN they were visiting a loved one when staff instructed them to return to the patient’s room before later escorting them out of the facility.

K-9 units were seen sweeping the hospital, parking garage and surrounding perimeter as law enforcement worked to secure the area.

The lockdown was lifted shortly before 9 p.m. after authorities determined there was no active threat.

No injuries were reported, and the hospital has since resumed normal operations.
