An 11-year-old girl remains hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit after she collided with a car while riding her scooter Tuesday evening in Plain Township.

The crash happened around 8:14 p.m. at the intersection of Johnnycake Ridge Avenue and 54th Street NE, according to a police report. Authorities said Claire Millington was riding her scooter when she entered the roadway and collided with a northbound 2019 Dodge Charger.

Claire was taken by ambulance to Aultman Hospital with serious injuries and was later flown by medical helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she remains in the PICU.

According to a GoFundMe, family members said Claire suffered a small brain bleed, a fractured collarbone, compound fractures to her tibia and fibula that required surgery, a partially collapsed lung, and additional injuries to her hip and knee.

After being sedated and intubated overnight, Claire was stable enough to have her breathing tube removed Wednesday morning. Her family called the development a “major step forward.”

A GoFundMe campaign created by Claire’s aunt, Cortney Ayers, is raising money to support the family during her recovery. Claire’s mother, Ashley, has remained by her side and recently lost her job.

“Funds raised will help cover meals, bills, transportation, and other unexpected costs that come with being in the hospital and caring for a child through a long recovery,” Ayers wrote.

The crash remains under investigation by local authorities. No charges have been announced at this time.

Claire’s family is asking for continued prayers and support as she begins a long road to recovery.
