An off-duty New York City police officer and four other people were killed Monday evening after a gunman opened fire outside a Midtown Manhattan high-rise that houses the National Football League’s headquarters and several major financial firms, authorities said.

The suspect, identified by law enforcement officials as Shane Tamura of Nevada, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after entering the 44-story building at 345 Park Avenue, according to police sources.

Officials said Tamura initially opened fire outside the building before running inside, where he fatally shot the officer, who was working private security in the lobby. The officer was transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center and later pronounced dead. One civilian was taken to Bellevue Hospital with injuries; the status of the remaining victims has not been publicly confirmed.

The building, located in the heart of Midtown just north of Grand Central Terminal, was placed on lockdown during the incident. Employees were ordered to shelter in place, including staff from the NFL, which occupies floors five through eight. The building also houses the offices of private equity firm Blackstone and the Consulate General of Ireland.

Emergency crews from the Fire Department of New York responded around 6:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire. A floor-by-floor search of the skyscraper was conducted by NYPD officers. Tamura was discovered barricaded on the 33rd floor, where he was found dead, authorities said.

Tamura was carrying identification, including a Las Vegas-issued concealed carry permit, according to two people briefed on the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing inquiry.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed multiple injuries and urged anyone still inside the building to remain where they were while police continued their search. He later traveled to the hospital to meet with the families of the victims.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as gunfire erupted. Jessica Chen, who was attending a presentation on the second floor, told ABC News she heard several shots in rapid succession. She and others barricaded themselves inside a conference room using tables.

“We were honestly really, really scared,” she said. “I texted my parents to tell them that I love them.”

Television footage showed dozens of people evacuating the building with their hands raised as police secured the scene. The city’s emergency alert system warned of significant traffic disruptions, road closures, and transit delays in the surrounding area.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
