A 68-year-old Mogadore man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot by an Uber driver during an early morning altercation in Uniontown, according to police.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Pontius Street, which marks the boundary between Stark and Portage counties. Uniontown Police Chief Michael Batchik said officers arrived to find the suspected shooter — a 35-year-old Akron man — already detained by Portage County deputies. The victim had been transported to Summa Health System’s Akron Campus by Suffield Fire personnel.

The dispute occurred inside the Uber vehicle during a ride to the passenger’s home and ended immediately after the shooting. The passenger was the only person in the vehicle besides the driver. Investigators believe the passenger may have been intoxicated, though the specific circumstances leading to the shooting remain under investigation.

“The altercation took place during the ride, and the situation escalated quickly,” Batchik said, adding that the passenger lives near the area where the incident occurred. The initial pickup location was in Akron, but authorities are still reviewing evidence and awaiting a full statement from the victim.

No charges have been filed as of Monday. Police say they will consult with the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete to determine whether charges are warranted.

The Uber ride ended at the scene of the shooting, and no other injuries were reported.
