Several people were rescued and one man was seriously injured after a fire broke out early Sunday morning at a multi-unit apartment building in Canton.
The Canton Fire Department was dispatched at 7:28 a.m. to 415 11th St. NW for reports of a fire at an occupied apartment complex. Crews arrived on scene four minutes later and found heavy fire extending across the roofline and multiple residents trapped on the second and third floors, according to a news release.
One man jumped from a third-story window, sustaining serious injuries. He was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital for treatment. Two other occupants were rescued from a third-story window and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
During a search of the building, firefighters located a fourth man and safely removed him without injury.
An adjacent apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution. Officials said there were multiple collapses of the roof and parapet walls, and the building suffered extensive fire damage. It will not be able to be re-occupied, authorities said.
The American Red Cross and the Refuge of Hope were called in to assist displaced residents.
The fire remained active as of late Sunday morning. Additional updates will be provided as they become available, officials said.
