A 29-year-old Gnadenhutten woman was killed and two 6-year-old boys suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in a head-on crash Monday morning in Tuscarawas County.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the woman who died as Megan Mazzoleni, 29, of Gnadenhutten.
The crash occurred around 7:52 a.m. Nov. 2 on Edwards Ridge Road, south of Ridge Road, in Rush Township.
According to investigators, Mazzoleni was driving a 2014 Ford Focus southbound on Edwards Ridge Road when her vehicle traveled left of center and struck a northbound 2020 Kia Telluride head-on.
The Kia was driven by Shanon Matsel, 43, of Port Washington.
Both vehicles had a 6-year-old boy riding in the back seat.
Troopers said Mazzoleni was not wearing a seat belt and had to be extricated from her vehicle using mechanical equipment. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.
Matsel, who was wearing a seat belt, also had to be extricated from her vehicle. She was transported by Uhrichsville EMS to Union Hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
Both boys were properly restrained at the time of the collision, according to the Highway Patrol. They were flown by medical helicopters to Akron Children’s Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Arrowhead Fire Department, Uhrichsville Fire Department, Rosenberry Township, D&S Towing and the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators said drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
