A 91-year-old man found dead Wednesday afternoon inside a heavily damaged vehicle concealed in a wooded area off U.S. Route 30 in Canton has been identified as David D. Duncan of Ashland.

The Canton Police Department released Duncan’s identity Thursday morning, Oct. 15, along with additional details about the crash.

Police said officers responded around 3:06 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, to the 18.2-mile marker along U.S. 30 eastbound after a vehicle was discovered off the roadway.

According to investigators, Duncan was driving a 2017 Hyundai Veloster eastbound when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the highway, struck a chain-link fence and rolled over.

The vehicle eventually came to rest on its side against several trees in a wooded area near the eastbound exit ramp to northbound Trump Avenue.

Authorities said the vehicle had blended into the surrounding trees and ground foliage, making it difficult to see from the roadway.

A passerby spotted the vehicle Wednesday afternoon. Duncan was found deceased inside and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police previously indicated Duncan appeared to have been deceased for some time before the discovery. The exact time of the crash has not been confirmed.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Canton Metro Crash Team responded to investigate. Police said it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing.
