A 71-year-old Coshocton man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he shot and injured his granddaughter during an altercation Wednesday.
Coshocton County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched Aug. 19 to a home in the 25500 block of Township Road 180 in White Eyes Township for a reported shooting.
Investigators determined Rick Phillips, 71, had been involved in a verbal altercation with his 24-year-old granddaughter, according to the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office.
During the altercation, Phillips allegedly went inside the home, retrieved a shotgun and fired at his granddaughter while she was outside in the yard, striking and injuring her.
Deputies arrived a short time later and began providing aid to the woman. Authorities were eventually able to safely remove her and Phillips’ wife from the property while Phillips remained barricaded inside the home.
The sheriff’s office activated its Special Response Team, and negotiators established communication with Phillips.
After speaking with negotiators for a period of time, Phillips exited the home and surrendered to deputies in the front yard without further incident.
Phillips was taken to the Coshocton County Justice Center and charged with felonious assault.
The sheriff’s office said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues and the case is reviewed by the Coshocton County Prosecutor’s Office.
The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office thanked its deputies, Special Response Team members, negotiators, dispatchers, detectives and K-9 division, along with Coshocton County EMS, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the prosecutor’s office for their assistance.
