wo women were injured and three children escaped unharmed after gunfire tore through a duplex on Hazlett Avenue NW Monday night, according to a Canton police report.
Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Hazlett Avenue NW on reports of a shooting. A frantic 911 caller reported the home had been struck by gunfire and that one person had been shot in the head but was conscious and breathing.
The first officers to arrive determined the shooting occurred inside one unit of the duplex. One officer entered through the front door and immediately began rendering aid to a woman in the living room while another officer learned there was a second victim in a nearby bedroom.
The second woman had suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh that was bleeding heavily. An officer applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding before she was taken from the home by medics. Police reported she did not appear to have any additional injuries.
While checking the bedroom, officers also discovered three young girls hiding inside a closet. The children were not injured and remained sheltered there until emergency crews safely removed the two victims from the residence. They were then escorted outside.
After the victims were transported to a hospital, officers secured the scene while detectives and crime scene investigators processed the evidence.
According to the police report, investigators found extensive damage from gunfire. At least 10 rounds appeared to have been fired through a window and the living room wall from outside the residence. Bullets traveled through a window-mounted air conditioning unit before continuing into the next room.
Investigators found bullet fragments lodged in a bedroom wall and on the living room floor. Three additional bullet holes were documented in the bedroom wall.
During the investigation, officers received information that another residence on Frederick Avenue SW may also have been a target. Officers responded to check the property but found no evidence it had been struck by gunfire.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Police have not announced any arrests or released additional information about a suspect.
