Pickup truck crashes into creek off I-77; man in critical condition

A man is in critical condition after a pickup truck left Interstate 77 and became fully submerged in the West Branch of Nimishillen Creek on Monday evening, according to the Canton Fire Department.

Canton City Dispatch received a report at approximately 6:31 p.m. Aug. 3 that a pickup truck had left the roadway on Interstate 77 northbound and entered the creek.

An initial crew from the Bolivar Fire Department came upon the crash and assisted Canton Fire Department personnel upon their arrival. Firefighters found the pickup truck upside down and fully submerged, with one male occupant trapped inside.

Fire crews extricated the man from the vehicle and determined he was unconscious and not breathing. Resuscitation efforts were initiated at the scene before he was transported to Aultman Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, officials said.

The Stark County Hazardous Materials Response Team was dispatched to contain fluids leaking from the vehicle.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Fire officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
