An East Canton man is facing an aggravated menacing charge after police say he allegedly brandished a firearm and fired a single round into the ground during a neighborhood dispute Thursday evening.
According to the East Canton Police Department, officers responded Thursday, July 30, to the 300 block of Orchard Drive after receiving reports of a confrontation involving the alleged discharge of a firearm.
Police said the incident began when a group of juveniles and one young adult male were setting off firecrackers in the neighborhood. According to the complainants, they were approached by a neighbor who became upset over the fireworks.
Investigators said the neighbor allegedly displayed a firearm during the confrontation before lowering the weapon and firing a single round into the ground.
Officers responded immediately, made contact with the suspect and took him into custody without incident. Police said the man cooperated with officers and surrendered peacefully. No injuries were reported.
Jail records identify the suspect as Derek Anthony Contos, 42, of East Canton. He was booked into the Stark County Jail at approximately 10:20 p.m. Thursday on a charge of aggravated menacing.
The East Canton Police Department said the incident remains under investigation.
In a statement, the department reminded residents that disagreements between neighbors should be resolved peacefully and encouraged anyone involved in a dispute to contact law enforcement before situations escalate.
