One person was seriously injured and another is believed to be missing after a house explosion early Thursday morning in northeast Canton.
The explosion was reported at approximately 3:57 a.m. at a home in the 1600 block of Bonnot Place NE, according to the Canton Fire Department.
Fire officials said the blast was so powerful it could be felt at the department’s Central Fire Station in downtown Canton, several miles from the scene.
When firefighters arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames. One individual was reportedly blown from the house by the force of the explosion and suffered severe burn injuries covering approximately 80% of their body. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Fire officials said another person is believed to have been inside the home at the time of the explosion and remains unaccounted for. Excavators are being brought to the scene to assist crews as they carefully search through the debris.
The explosion also damaged a neighboring home. Three people who were inside that residence were able to escape safely before emergency crews arrived, according to the fire department.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
