An 18-year-old man is facing charges after a 21-year-old woman was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Canton, according to police.
Canton police identified the victim as Dalaysia N. Brewton, 21, of Canton. Javon M. Ogden, 18, of Canton, was arrested and charged with reckless homicide and tampering with evidence, both third-degree felonies.
The shooting happened around 2:35 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of 11th Street NE.
According to Canton Police Chief John Gabbard, officers responding to a 911 call found Brewton suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Canton Fire Department paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but Brewton died at the scene.
A 911 caller told a dispatcher he was doing automotive work at a nearby residence when he heard a single “pop.” The caller said he went to investigate and found a woman lying on the kitchen floor with a significant amount of blood around her.
During the call, the witness recounted what the alleged suspect told him immediately after the gunshot.
“Bro, my gun fell,” the caller said the alleged suspect told him.
The caller moved away from the residence and waited nearby for officers to arrive.
Police said patrol officers located Ogden nearby and took him into custody without incident.
Authorities have not released additional details about what investigators believe led to the shooting or the circumstances surrounding the tampering with evidence charge.
Police classified the case as a homicide in a news release issued Wednesday. Ogden is charged with reckless homicide, which under Ohio law alleges a person recklessly caused the death of another person.
The investigation remains ongoing.
