A Wayne County firefighter was killed Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while assisting a stranded driver along Stratton Road, authorities said.

Lt. Paul Charles Mickolick, 43, of the Town and Country Fire District, died after being hit by a car around 10:39 p.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Mickolick had responded in his personal vehicle to help a man whose pickup truck was stuck in a roadside ditch.

The patrol said 33-year-old Tylor James Green, of West Salem, had become stuck while attempting to leave a private field in a Ford F-150. As Mickolick and Green stood near the pickup, a southbound 2006 Cadillac CTS driven by Creighton L. Trimble, 64, also of West Salem, veered off the right side of the road and into the ditch, striking both men and the vehicle.

Emergency crews transported Mickolick and Green to Cleveland Clinic Lodi Hospital. Green was later flown to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with serious injuries. No information was released regarding Trimble’s condition.

Mickolick previously served as a flight paramedic with Cleveland Clinic before joining the Town and Country Fire District as a full-time firefighter-paramedic in 2022.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, New Pittsburg Fire and EMS, Lodi Fire and EMS, and Bear’s Towing and Repair.
