A student at Southway Intermediate School brought a magazine containing ammunition to school on Wednesday and allegedly implied they had a firearm in their backpack, according to Perry Township Police Chief Bryan Taylor.

In a statement released Wednesday evening, Taylor said no firearm was found and that no weapon was ever present on school grounds.

The incident was reported by students to school staff, who immediately activated safety protocols. Police responded swiftly to the building and are continuing to investigate the matter in collaboration with Perry Local Schools.

“We commend the quick thinking and responsible actions of the students who came forward, as well as the staff who acted decisively to secure the building,” Taylor said.

Authorities did not identify the student involved or release details about any potential disciplinary or legal action. The district maintains a zero-tolerance policy for weapons or weapon-related items on campus.

Families and students are encouraged to report threats or suspicious behavior through the SaferOH Tip Line by calling or texting (844) SAFEROH. Tips may also be submitted directly to the Perry Township Police Department at (330) 478-5121.

“We understand that incidents like this may cause concern, and we want to reassure you that the safety of our children and educators is our top priority,” Taylor said.
