In Akron, officers are investigating an incident involving a person of interest in a Michigan murder.

Late Sunday night and again this morning, alerts from the Flock License Plate Reader led officers to a blue Hyundai Tucson linked to a homicide in Wyandotte, Michigan.

Monday morning just before 11:00 a.m., officers spotted the vehicle on Copley Road and conducted a “high-risk” traffic stop in the A&A Beauty Supply parking lot.

Approaching cautiously, officers instructed the 59-year-old male driver to turn off the car and drop a knife he held. Police say the suspect then set himself on fire while inside the vehicle. Despite sustaining burn injuries, he was taken into custody and later transported to Akron Children’s Hospital.

The officers used a fire extinguisher to douse the small flames in the car. EMS responded to attend to the suspect, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
