The Canton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that left one man dead and another man behind bars.

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. Monday morning in the area of Stardale Ave. (Perry Twp) in Stark County.

Officials say Joeallen Meeley, 32, of Canton, was operating a 2006 Yamaha V-Star Motorcycle traveling west on Southway St.

Mr. Meeley’s motorcycle was rear ended by Joshua Gibson, 30, of Massillon who was driving a Dodge Charger. Meeley was ejected from his motorcycle and onto the roadway.

Gibson’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, through a fence before striking a dirt embankment, according to OSP.

Meeley died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet. Gibson was transported to Mercy Hospital and evaluated.

Gibson was released from the hospital and booked into the Stark County Jail on the following charges: Vehiclular homicide, operating a vehicle impaired, assured clear distance and seatbelt.

Drugs and alcohol are a suspected factor in the crash.
