A 16-year-old Canton murder suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man earlier this month was arrested Monday in Cleveland after barricading himself inside a home, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Members of the U.S. Marshals-led Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Savheon Monroe, 16, Monday afternoon. Monroe was wanted by the Canton Police Department on charges of murder, felonious assault and discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises in connection with the July 14 shooting death of Jordan A. Horton, 19, of Canton.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, investigators developed numerous leads after Monroe fled following the shooting. On Monday, members of the task force’s Canton and Cleveland divisions located Monroe at a home in the 11600 block of Hopkins Avenue in Cleveland.
Authorities said Monroe barricaded himself in the basement of the residence as officers attempted to take him into custody. Task force members deployed OC spray and pepper balls into the home before Monroe surrendered. He was taken into custody without injury to himself or law enforcement officers.
Canton police responded around 7 a.m. July 14 to the 900 block of Alan Page Drive SE after a 911 caller reported an unresponsive man lying near a vehicle in the parking lot of the Skyline Terrace Apartments.
Officers found Horton dead from a gunshot wound to the back.
Police have said their investigation determined that two individuals were involved in the shooting.
The first suspect, Jason L. Singletary, 25, of Canton, turned himself in to investigators on July 15. He is charged with complicity to commit murder, felonious assault and discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott praised the efforts of the task force following Monroe’s arrest.
“This suspect had no intention of doing the right thing by turning himself in,” Elliott said. “Without the dedicated work of the members of our task force from Canton to Cleveland and all across northern Ohio, this suspect could have caused more violence across our communities. He is behind bars and the community is safer for it.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
