A North Ridgeville woman has died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash that occurred late last month on Interstate 77 in Tuscarawas County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers from the New Philadelphia Post said the crash happened at about 11:15 a.m. Sept. 26 on I-77 southbound in Jefferson Township. A white 2014 Kia Sorento driven by Leonard O. McKinney Jr., 80, of North Ridgeville, traveled off the left side of the road, struck an embankment in the median, and overturned. The vehicle re-entered the roadway, went off the right side, and struck a guardrail face.

Naoma E. McKinney, 81, of North Ridgeville, was a front-seat passenger. Both were transported by Smith Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Canton.

Investigators said Leonard McKinney was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while Naoma McKinney was not. Troopers said Leonard McKinney may have fallen asleep while driving.

The Stark County Coroner’s Office pronounced Naoma McKinney dead Oct. 7 at Mercy Hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Stonecreek Fire Department, Smith Ambulance, and Keith’s Towing.
