Two women who died after being found unresponsive between two vehicles in Tuscarawas County had apparently been pinned between the trucks for about two hours, according to new information from Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell.
Campbell said one vehicle had pulled into the Atwood Dairy Bar along state Route 212 NE near Mineral City after experiencing a problem with the vehicle. A second vehicle, driven by a family member, pulled in behind and off to the side.
According to Campbell, the second truck was not placed in park and began to idle forward, eventually pressing against the first truck and pinning the two women between the vehicles.
Campbell said Sgt. Bryan Patrick had to move the first truck backward to allow emergency responders to reach the women. As he did so, the second truck began drifting forward again, prompting another person to jump inside and place it in park.
Both trucks were still running when deputies arrived, Campbell said.
Investigators believe the women had been pinned between the vehicles for approximately two hours before they were discovered.
Deputies were called to the 4000 block of state Route 212 NE around 9:35 p.m. Sunday for a report of two unresponsive people. Deputies began lifesaving measures before medical personnel arrived. Both women were transported to an area hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Campbell said the women were a mother-in-law, 58, and daughter-in-law, 34, and had been vendors at the Atwood Area Fall Festival, which concluded Sunday at Atwood Lake Park.
The identities of the women have not yet been released.
Authorities previously said there were no obvious signs of foul play and no public safety concerns related to the incident. The Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office will determine the official manner and cause of death.
