A woman was hospitalized Thursday morning after an active shooter opened fire at the Versailles Gardens Apartments in North Canton, prompting a massive law enforcement response involving local police, SWAT, and federal agencies. The suspect has since been taken into custody, police confirmed.
According to the North Canton Police Department, the incident began around 8:50 a.m. when emergency services received a call from a female resident who said she was injured. Two minutes later, a separate report of shots fired was made.
The first North Canton officer arrived at the apartment complex at 8:55 a.m. and entered the victim’s apartment shortly afterward. By 9:02 a.m., officers confirmed the woman had sustained injuries.
As officers attempted to rescue the victim, they came under heavy gunfire. Police said they extracted the woman through a bedroom window at 9:06 a.m. while the suspect fired multiple rounds. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital by 9:09 a.m. Her condition has not been released.
SWAT was activated at 9:07 a.m., and mutual aid was requested from agencies across Stark County, as well as from the FBI and U.S. Marshals. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Residents in the area were urged to shelter in place during the standoff. Authorities have since secured the scene.
The North Canton Police Department said more information will be released as the investigation continues.
