A 35-year-old Massillon man was hospitalized after being shot during an altercation in Canton Monday evening, according to police.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 6:09 p.m. in the 700 block of Prospect Avenue SW. When they arrived, they found evidence of a shooting behind 719 Prospect Ave. SW, including multiple spent shell casings and blood on the ground, police said.
The victim, identified as Deangelo Detonio Snell, 35, was taken to Aultman Hospital before officers arrived. Police said Snell was shot by a suspect, causing serious injury. He remained hospitalized Tuesday but was listed in stable condition with injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening, according to Canton police Capt. John Bosley.
Witnesses told investigators they heard an altercation followed by multiple gunshots. A dark-colored SUV was seen fleeing the area, heading eastbound on 7th Street SW, police said. Surveillance video from a nearby property captured the vehicle at the time of the shooting, and investigators are reviewing the footage.
The suspect has not been identified, and the case remains under investigation.
