A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting that targeted a vehicle carrying an 8-year-old girl near a southeast Canton fuel station earlier this month.
Police said Larry Gene Grimes has been charged with complicity to commit felonious assault, a second-degree felony, following the Feb. 17 incident near the Hall of Fame Fuel Mart on Sherrick Road SE. grimes compaint.
Authorities previously arrested Deon Davis, 41, after a pursuit and foot chase on the night of the shooting.
What investigators say happened
According to Canton police, an officer assigned to the afternoon patrol division was at the department’s training academy when two gunshots were heard nearby. As the officer exited the parking lot to investigate, a light-colored sedan sped into the lot and a woman jumped out yelling that someone had shot at their car and that her 8-year-old daughter was inside.
The woman told officers the shots were fired near the Hall of Fame Fuel Mart, about a block away, and that the suspects had been on foot in the parking lot.
Police drove toward the area and observed several vehicles leaving eastbound on Sherrick Road SE. One — a Kia SUV with a shattered rear window — accelerated away, prompting a pursuit.
During the chase, a passenger jumped from the SUV in the 900 block of Sherrick Road SE. The vehicle continued before eventually crashing in the 800 block of the roadway. Officers saw a suspect running into a wooded area.
Police said the suspect threw a firearm over a fence into a nearby yard while fleeing. Officers surrounded the suspect — later identified as Davis — who surrendered without further incident. A black 9mm Beretta handgun was recovered from the backyard.
No injuries were reported.
Role of the second suspect
Court records allege Grimes traveled with Davis to the fuel mart and confronted a man identified as Michael Daniels. Investigators say Grimes engaged in a verbal dispute that “encourag[ed] and facilitat[ed] a violent confrontation,” after which Davis fired at Daniels’ vehicle in an attempt to cause death or serious physical harm to its occupants. grimes compaint
