A 73-year-old motorcyclist was killed and a Dover man seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Tuscarawas County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday on state Route 212 just east of County Road 86, also known as Tabor Ridge Road, in Warren Township.
The Highway Patrol said James H. Goodmote Jr., 73, of Rootstown, was traveling east on state Route 212 on a 2012 Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle.
At the same time, Corey J.M. Fisher, 32, of Dover, was traveling west in a 2006 Honda Civic.
Investigators said the Honda traveled left of center and struck the motorcycle. The Honda then went off the left side of the road and hit the face of a guardrail.
The motorcycle traveled off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail face. After hitting the guardrail, Goodmote slid down an embankment.
Goodmote was pronounced dead at the scene. The Highway Patrol said he was not using safety equipment.
Fisher suffered serious injuries and was transported by Smith Ambulance to Aultman Hospital. Investigators said he was not wearing a seat belt and impairment is believed to be a factor in the crash.
State Route 212 was closed for approximately 3½ hours while emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.
The Highway Patrol was assisted by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfield Township Fire Department, Sherrodsville Fire Department, Smith Ambulance, Ohio Department of Transportation, Keith’s Towing and the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation.
