A Mineral City man died Wednesday evening after his motorcycle struck a downed tree in Tuscarawas County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers from the New Philadelphia Post said the crash occurred at about 7:06 p.m. on County Road 66 (Roxford Church Road) in Union Township.

Investigators said a 1999 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic driven by 47-year-old Michael McHale was traveling north when it struck a tree that had fallen across the roadway. The motorcycle overturned and went off the right side of the road.

McHale was transported by Smith Ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, then airlifted to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he later died from his injuries.

The Highway Patrol said McHale was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Smith Ambulance, Sherrodsville Fire Department, Dennison Fire Department and Affordable Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
