Massillon officials say a reported search for an injured hunter that drew significant emergency resources Sunday night has been deemed a hoax.
Authorities confirmed Monday that there was no injured or missing hunter, despite reports that prompted an extensive response in the Massillon area near Perry Township.
Emergency crews were dispatched Sunday evening, Dec. 21, after reports surfaced that a hunter had fallen from a tree stand in a wooded area. A medical helicopter was placed in the air, and drones were used in an effort to locate the individual.
Officials said crews searched into the night but did not locate anyone. A Massillon Fire official confirmed earlier Monday that personnel remained on scene as a precaution, though no new information had been developed at that time.
Following further investigation, Massillon officials determined the report was false.
Authorities are reminding the public that hoax calls and false reports can divert emergency responders and critical resources away from legitimate emergencies.
No additional information has been released.
