The City of Canton is mourning the death of former Mayor Thomas M. Bernabei, who died Thursday morning at Aultman Hospital following a brief illness, according to a statement from the mayor’s office.
Bernabei, a lifelong Stark County resident, served as Canton’s mayor from 2016 to 2023. His tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen neighborhoods, improve city services and foster long-term stability across the community.
“Mayor Bernabei left an impactful legacy on this community for generations to come,” Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II said in the release. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to Lady Bebe, his family, and all throughout Canton who knew him and worked alongside him.”
City officials requested privacy for the family as they grieve. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date.
