A former Canton Local Schools student is barred from district property after allegedly making threats toward Canton South Middle School, according to a message sent to families early Tuesday morning.

Superintendent Larry Tausch said law enforcement notified district administrators of a “potential concern” involving the former student. The situation was brought to the district’s attention and investigated Monday evening.

“The student will not be returning home and is not permitted on district property,” Tausch said in the message distributed through ParentSquare. He added that law enforcement has conducted interviews and continues to manage the situation.

“At this time, there is no active threat to our schools,” Tausch said.

District officials credited law enforcement with responding swiftly, allowing the matter to be addressed quickly.

Tausch encouraged anyone with information related to school safety to report it to school administrators or local law enforcement.

“We take all potential threats seriously and respond promptly in coordination with law enforcement,” he said. “The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we will continue to keep families informed if any new information arises.”

School will continue as scheduled, according to the district.
