A family of five was displaced and a dog died after a fire damaged a Lexington Township home Monday.

The fire was reported at 12425 McCallum Ave. NE, according to Lexington Township firefighter Tom Hobson.

Hobson said the fire started in the home’s attached garage and spread to the residence. The garage was fully involved when Lexington Township Engine 381 arrived.

Firefighters from Lexington Township, Marlboro and Washington Township began attacking the fire while conducting a primary search of the home.

During the response, firefighters rescued a dog from a second-floor bedroom. The dog later died, Hobson said.

The fire was contained to the garage, but the residence sustained extensive smoke damage.

Two adults and three children were displaced by the fire and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Lexington Township received mutual aid from the Marlboro Fire Company, Washington Township Fire Department, Atwater Fire Department, Alliance Fire Department and EMT Ambulance.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
