Dover man dies after fire breaks out in front living room of home

A 73-year-old man died Friday afternoon after a fire broke out at a two-story single-family home on South Johnson Avenue, authorities said.

Fire crews were dispatched to 202 South Johnson Ave. at 12:40 p.m., according to Dover Fire Capt. Brooks Ross. Responders entered the residence and removed the victim, identified as Gregory Beitzel, the sole occupant of the home. Beitzel was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. at Union Hospital.

Ross said the fire began in the front living area of the home. Smoke damage extended throughout the house, though officials said the structure remains intact.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Dover Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Dover firefighters received mutual aid from New Philadelphia, Strasburg and Bolivar departments, as well as Smith Ambulance.
