A 16-year-old Canton girl who was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital after being pulled from the lake at Wood’s Tall Timber Resort on Sunday evening has died, according to an update from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen had reportedly been underwater for several minutes before she was located and brought to shore. The emergency call was received at 5:05 p.m. on July 13. Sheriff Orvis Campbell said the girl had gone under while returning from the water trampoline and failed to resurface.

Resort staff quickly organized a search effort with the help of volunteers. Searchers formed a line and entered the lake, eventually locating the teen in the water. CPR was started by a guest and lifeguards and continued by first responders, including deputies and members of the New Philadelphia Fire Department.

She was transported by medical helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital with a pulse and was breathing at the time, according to initial reports.

On Monday, July 14, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the girl passed away. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office notified the sheriff’s office of her death and will continue handling the case.

“We will be providing all of our information with the Summit County Medical Examiner to assist them with their duties,” Sheriff Campbell said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to the family.”

The teen’s identity has not been released, and no further information will be provided at this time to give the family privacy.

Four lifeguards were reportedly on duty at the time of the incident. The resort announced Monday morning that the beach and lake will remain closed until further notice.
