A bicyclist was killed early Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle at an intersection in Canton, according to police.

Chief John Gabbard said officers were called to Navarre Road SW and Harrison Avenue SW around 4:15 a.m. for a crash involving a motor vehicle and an electric bicycle.

Investigators said a 2000 Ford Excursion was traveling south on Harrison Avenue SW when it struck the bicyclist, who reportedly failed to stop at a red light while traveling east on Navarre Road SW.

The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the Ford was not injured.

Police said drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors for the driver, and it is unknown whether they were a factor for the bicyclist.

The Canton Metro Crash Team is handling the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Canton Police Department Traffic Bureau at 330-438-4485 or submit an anonymous tip through Tip411 at www.cantonohio.gov/police.

Jordan Miller News is choosing not to publish the bicyclist’s name at this time, as the crash occurred only hours ago. The individual’s name will be released later today once officials confirm that all family notifications have been made.
