A 29-year-old woman was hospitalized early Sunday after being shot, an incident that also claimed the life of her unborn child, Akron police said.
Officers responded to Cleveland Clinic Akron General at about 12:30 a.m. Aug. 17, where the woman was being treated for significant injuries. Police said her injuries are not life-threatening, but the child did not survive.
“We are deeply concerned about this act of violence that occurred over the weekend in our city,” Akron Police Chief Brian Harding said in a statement. “Our officers responded quickly, and we are actively investigating this incident. We understand the fear and concern this could cause in our community, and I want to reassure our residents that reducing violent crime remains our top priority. Our thoughts are with the victim and her family during this unimaginable time.”
Mayor Shammas Malik called the shooting “heartbreaking” and “reprehensible,” saying it underscores the importance of continued collaboration between the police department and community groups to curb violence.
