A 21-year-old Atwater man has died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash last week on state Route 44, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Clayton P. Jacobs died Dec. 23 at Summa Akron City Hospital, four days after the crash, which occurred around 6:53 a.m. Dec. 19 just north of state Route 619.

Investigators said Jacobs was driving northbound in a 2012 Volkswagen GTI when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2020 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 74-year-old Canton woman. Following the collision, both vehicles left the roadway. The Hyundai traveled off the right side of the road and came to rest in a ditch, while the Volkswagen also went off the right side and overturned.

Jacobs was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital by Randolph EMS with serious injuries. The Canton woman was taken by a Hartville Fire Department ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, where she was treated for what were believed to be minor injuries, authorities said.

Jacobs was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. Dec. 23, according to Gary Guenther, chief investigator for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
