A Plain Township man has been charged in connection with a violent confrontation with a Canton police officer at a Walmart on the city’s east side.

Court documents reviewed by Jordan Miller News allege Shane C.L. Newman, 21, was taken into custody around 1:47 p.m. Dec. 18 after being stopped by a uniformed officer at the Walmart located at 3200 Atlantic Blvd. NE.

According to the criminal complaint, Newman was confronted after allegedly leaving the store with merchandise that had not been paid for. Authorities say the situation escalated when Newman pulled out a firearm and attempted to shoot the officer in the head.

Investigators reported recovering a loaded handgun and roughly 50 blue pills from Newman at the scene. Newman allegedly told officers the pills were MDMA, a synthetic drug often referred to as Molly.

The complaint further states Newman was legally barred from possessing a firearm because of prior felony convictions in 2023, including aggravated drug possession and illegally bringing drugs onto the grounds of a specified government facility.

Newman is expected to appear in Canton Municipal Court on Dec. 19, where he will face a series of felony counts tied to the incident, including allegations that he attempted to kill a police officer, assaulted an officer, committed robbery, possessed illegal drugs and unlawfully carried a firearm despite being prohibited from doing so.
