The Canton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a serious crash that left a bicyclist severely injured early Friday morning in Perry Township.

Troopers say the crash happened around 12:23 a.m. on Whipple Avenue near 11th Street NW. A 2015 Jeep Patriot, driven by 32-year-old Margaret Fye of Tucson, Arizona, was heading south when it struck a bicyclist also traveling southbound.

The bicyclist, identified as 32-year-old Timothy Coverdale of Canton, sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital. Officials say Fye left the scene, but she was located a few blocks away from the incident.

Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Perry Township Fire and EMS, Perry Township and Jackson Township police, and Luthi’s Towing.
